Photoshop HD Photo Plugins
Microsoft has finally officially released its free HD Photo plug-ins for Photoshop CS2 and CS3.
I wrote about HD Photo a while back when it was first announced and after my initial doubts - why on earth would we want a JPEG replacement? - I was won round by the flexibility of the specification...
So what's happened since? Support was naturally included in Vista and then, in July, Microsoft pulled off a real coup when the JPEG steering committe announced that HD Photo had their official approval to become a new flavour of JPEG, JPEG XR (eXtended Range).
It all sounds good but as Microsoft has discovered it really doesn't mean a lot. What matters is the gateway, the key applications that everyone uses. And if you're dealing with photos you're inevitably dealing with Photoshop right the way through from Extended to Elements.
In a way it's quite funny. Microsoft is a past master at preventing new standards taking hold by failing to provide support in the market leader (yes I'm thinking of Java, Javascript, CSS and SVG) and now it is suffering a similar fate at the hands of Adobe.
On the other hand it wasn't acceptable when Microsoft did it and if Adobe is as different a proposition as it claims, this is a good way to prove it. Adobe should build full HD Photo support into Photoshop and let the end user decide whether HD Photo has anything to offer (answer: it does).
