This tutorial was developed for the Friends of ED book Photoshop Elements: From Zero to Hero and is designed to work with the Eiffel Tower sample file that ships with Elements

Below is the introduction which gives an idea of the topics covered.

Introducing the Project

In this chapter we’re going to take a stock photo of the Eiffel Tower and turn it into a work of art that attempts to capture something of the romantic and exciting spirit of Paris by night.

Our goal might be to commemorate a special memory with something a bit more permanent than a holiday snap; to create a card for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary; or to produce a promotional advert or poster to drum up business. Our ulterior motive is to really push Photoshop Elements to the limits; to discover just what we can achieve and how.

During the project we’re going to be looking at all of the following:

• Preparing your image
• Basic image enhancement
• Filter-based styling
• Text handling
• Style-based formatting
• Layer-based compositing
• Brush-based painting
• Vector-based shape handling
• Non-destructive colour correction
• File exporting
• Direct printing

It might sound intimidating, but don’t panic. Yes, we’re going to be exploring the tricks that the Photoshop professionals use but, when you see them in practice on a real world project, you’ll see that they aren’t as daunting as you might have thought. And when Elements gives you access to such high-end power, why not use it?

All the work on the site (over 250 reviews, over 100 articles and tutorials) has been written by me, Tom Arah It's also me who maintains the site, answers your emails etc. The site is very popular and from your feedback I know it's a useful resource - but it takes a lot to keep it up.

You can help keep the site running, independent and free by Bookmarking the site (if you don't you might never find it again), telling others about it and by coming back (new content is added every month). Even better you can make a donation eg $5 the typical cost of just one issue of a print magazine or buy anything via Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk (now or next time you feel like shopping) using these links or the designer-info.com shop - it's a great way of quickly finding the best buys, it costs you nothing and I gain a small but much-appreciated commission.

Thanks very much, Tom Arah
